Names of God: Elohim

 

Elohim is the God of beginnings. Scripture opens with this powerful declaration: “In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Before time was measured, before the earth was formed, and before humanity drew its first breath, Elohim was already present, speaking creation into existence. As Creator, He formed the world with order, purpose, and divine wisdom. Whether the “six days” of creation are understood as literal days or as a mystery known fully only to God, Scripture reminds us that “with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8). What matters most is that creation was accomplished by His will, His power, and His perfect design.

As Elohim, the Creator, God is also the One who gave life to you. Your existence is not accidental; it is intentional. You were created with value, purpose, and meaning. Because Elohim creates with perfection, your life is a gift meant to reflect His goodness in the world. Yet the world often stands in opposition to God, making a life committed to Elohim challenging at times. Still, those challenges do not erase your purpose. Instead, they become opportunities to trust the Creator who formed you and continues to guide you.

To know God as Elohim is to remember that He is not distant from His creation. He is involved, attentive, and sovereign over all He has made. When life feels uncertain or when the world seems chaotic, Elohim reminds us that the same God who brought order out of emptiness can bring purpose, peace, and direction into our lives. Our response is to honor Him as Creator, trust His design, and live each day as people shaped by His hand.
