It's Only a Tool

When I was much younger, Bobby Darin’s song “If I Had a Hammer” often filled the airwaves.

If I had a hammer,  I'd hammer in the morning

I'd hammer in the evening

All over this land

I'd hammer out danger

 I'd hammer out a warning

I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters All over this land

At its heart, the song was a cry against the injustice and brokenness seen in the world. Yet the deeper need of humanity cannot be answered by a song, a protest, or even a tool in our hands. The world needs hearts changed by the truth and grace of God.

A hammer is only a tool. In the right hands, it can help build a home, repair what is broken, or hang a picture that brings warmth to a room. But in careless or angry hands, that same hammer can cause pain and destruction.

The difference is not found in the hammer itself, but in the heart and purpose of the one who holds it. Left alone in the garage, it is simply an unused instrument. Placed in the hands of a skilled carpenter, it becomes part of something useful, meaningful, and lasting.

In a far greater way, God has placed an awesome and holy tool into our hands: His Word. The Scriptures are not meant to sit unopened on a desk or gather dust on a shelf. They are living words meant to shape our thoughts, soften our hearts, correct our steps, and draw us closer to Christ.

God’s desire has never changed. He wants His Word to dwell richly within us, not merely as information we read, but as truth that transforms how we live. When Scripture is received, reflected upon, and obeyed, it becomes a holy instrument in the hands of God—building faith, repairing what sin has damaged, and equipping us to serve others for the glory of Christ.

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly, as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psValms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” – Colossians 3:16

Lord, place Your Word deeply within my heart. Use it to shape my life, guide my words, and make me a faithful instrument of Your love. Amen.
